Built by racers, for racers
We're a team of Icelandic developers — and cyclists — led by Reynir Þór Hübner. We built and ran the registration system behind some of Iceland's biggest races for over a decade, and we're doing it again — this time designed to run in organizers' hands, not ours.
2009
Where we started
We built a system called Competiz in 2009 to manage the biggest cycling races in Iceland at the time — the Blue Lagoon Challenge and Heiðmerkuráskorun among them. Those races grew fast once the system was behind them, and in the years after, other organizers picked up Competiz too: ultra marathons, cross-country skiing, and more cycling races — criteriums, mountain bike, road.
2020
A hard few years, then a decision
We kept running the system for years, building new features and adjusting it as the sport itself changed. Then COVID and a run of volcanic eruptions hit multiple races we depended on, on top of the real work of running a small software business alongside it all. Development slowed down, and we made a call: close Competiz down, rather than keep patching something built for a different time, and build what we actually wanted next.
Now
Why we rebuilt it
We've rebuilt it with everything we always wanted it to have. Using AI in the development meant we could build something genuinely high-tech and solidly engineered without pushing the cost of building it up — we've saved real money on development. That's what lets us offer organizers a serious platform at a much lower price than it would otherwise take to run one. We're not done — this is something we keep building and adding to.
It's also built differently on purpose: less dependent on us being personally involved to keep an event running, more in the organizer's own hands — self-serve sign-up, staff roles, and configuration you control yourself, not something you wait on us for.
The name
Ratato, and Ratatoskr
The new system is called ratato, after Ratatoskr — in Norse mythology (Ásatrú), the squirrel of Yggdrasil, the world tree, said to run its length carrying messages between the eagle at its crown and what waits at its roots. Not the strongest creature in the mythology, but the one known for endurance — up and down the tree, over and over. Felt like the right name for something built by endurance athletes, for endurance events.

How we think about your money
We're based in Stockholm today. We built this for organizers, not to hold onto organizers' money — so we charge a small flat platform fee per registration (see pricing), no monthly fee, no percentage of your ticket price. The rest goes straight to your own Stripe account, the moment the transaction happens — not on a payout schedule we control.
We also don't take responsibility for your race, or for reimbursing your registrants. That's yours — we build the tool, you run the event.
